McDonald’s Honors Mothers’ Love With an Outdoor Advertising Campaign

In 2022, McDonald’s, deeply troubled by the lack of places to rest for mothers whose young children were being treated in South Korean hospitals, teamed up with the agency Leo Burnett Korea to launch an emotional outdoor advertising campaign called “Mom’s Bed”. The campaign set out not only to honor the noble love of mothers but also to call on the community to donate toward building the RMHC House in Seoul, bringing practical support to families in need.

McDonald’s ‘Mom’s Bed’ Campaign: Honoring Mothers’ Sacrifice and Calling for an RMHC House

In South Korea, when children are hospitalized, mothers often stay by their side in cramped hospital rooms with nowhere proper to rest. They can only catch a few restless moments of sleep on a chair or a mat laid on the floor, which seriously hurts both their sleep quality and their health. Sadly, Korean culture tends to treat this as normal, so the hardships mothers endure are often overlooked.

McDonald’s “Mom’s Bed” campaign grew out of this heartbreaking reality. McDonald’s wanted to shine a light on mothers’ quiet sacrifice and call on the community to help build the RMHC House in Seoul, offering comfort and practical support to families who need help.

The image of tiny beds placed in public spaces became the most moving feature of McDonald’s “Mom’s Bed” campaign. At just 160 cm long and 60 cm wide, these beds represent the cramped sleeping space mothers endure while caring for a sick child. The size is not enough for an adult to lie down comfortably, yet it is the harsh reality that Korean mothers face every day.

McDonald’s tiny beds were placed everywhere, from streets and parks to shopping malls and McDonald’s restaurants, catching the attention of large numbers of passersby. Their presence in these locations helped the message of the “Mom’s Bed” campaign spread widely.

McDonald’s encouraged people to lie down on these small beds to get at least a sense of the hardship mothers bear. Each “Mom’s Bed” was fitted with a QR code. By scanning it, users could follow the difficult journey of mothers caring for sick children and had the chance to donate to support families in need.

McDonald’s “Mom’s Bed” campaign also highlighted the need for an RMHC House in Seoul, which provides lodging for families whose children have serious illnesses. Currently, South Korea has only one RMHC, in Yangsan, a full 388 km from Seoul, underscoring the urgent need for a support facility closer to families in the capital.

Creative Director SooHee Yang shared: “Discovering the hardships that many parents go through was a profound experience for all of us at McDonald’s. We hope this McDonald’s campaign will help parents sleep better and stay healthier, so they can face every challenge ahead.”

McDonald’s deeply humane outdoor advertising campaign quickly drew the interest of passersby, who tried out the tiny bed and expressed admiration for these resilient mothers. McDonald’s “Mom’s Bed” received enthusiastic support from the community, with more than 300,000 USD in donations from benefactors, a reach of more than 377 million people, and a site near Seoul Children’s Hospital approved for building the House in 2024.
